Fibre-optic cable treatment

03/13/2006 12:28 PM

Hi All, I currently have a requirement to optimise the optical properties of the exposed ends of a blade-cut fibre-optic cable. What I have in mind is a low-cost 'paint-or-dip' material that can be applied to the ends of the cable in order to both minimise minor damage caused during the cutting action, and reduce the adhesion potential for incidental contaminants (the cable is not in a particularly dirty environment, but may be subject to airborne dust particles). The coating must have a similar (or ideally identical!!) refractive index to the cable core. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance

Fibre Optic Cable

You don't say if the fiber is a silica based or plastic based material. Neither do you say which wavelength you are transmitting at. Both of these will have an effect on the coating to be chosen because the refractive index is dependant on both wavelength and material. When you say "blade" cut fiber, is this with some sort of a saw that is cutting the entire cable, or some variation on fiber cleaving which is done on the fiber alone. There are a number of index matching gels on the market. Have a look at www.fiberinstrumentsales.com part no F1-0001V or part number 9006.

Testing, repairing & Matching and Treatment of Fibre Cables need lot of Professional Test & Finishing Tools. It is suggested not to try if donot have these Pro Facillities.
