It depends upon the Tariff under which the electricity is purchased.

For most domestic consumers in the UK it will have no effect, as the chance of a less-than-unity load power factor is taken into account by the suppliers when pricing the energy supplied.

For industrial consumers it can make a large difference, for which purpose power factor correction equipment is available for investment.

There may not be any penalty as a domestic consumer but you would be paying higher electricity bill for the energy wested or un seen energy losses due to Low power factor

The power factor for all the capacitance found in a domestic user's cables under no-load conditions is zero. And at that point, the meter stops going round, though the circuit be energised. With no resistive load no energy is wasted. Result? No bill, because no units have been used.

A kWh meter measures kWh, not kVA. Unless, of course, it's the KrisDelTM one.....

As replied for domestic customers as i Know no effect on Tariff. In case of industrial customers there is a penalty for low power factor which reflects in Maximum demand

The Power factor affects on electricity bill in industrial. Please contact to your local electricity distributor for details information. In my place: if Pf≥0.85 i will be refund and else will be penalty.

The low power factor in system will cause power loss due to reactive power. The low power factor penalty in electricity bill is a condition insisted by the supplier as a clause in their contracts normally by the supplier. If that clause is there in your contract then the supplier will charge penalty for keeping the power factor below the contracted value. So there will be adverse effect on your bills. In such a case you will have to install power factor correctors in your system. Even if they are not charging still you are not doing good for the society as you will be wasting energy which is very precious one hence ensure that your system maintains power factor above 0.85 to avoid energy losses.

As said above you need to check your contract with your supplier...or check your invoice.

Here we are charged US $0.126 per kwh and US $0.15 per Kvarh. Since my electric bill averages are around US $90,000 per month I do everything I can to reduce reactive loads to a minimum.

Ofcourse. The more power hungry you are the greater your power requirement is, hence your power factor goes up in your bill, and they'll charge ya more end of story.

It just comes down to - How money hungry your electricity supplier is? Meaning weather it gives you discount for your excess power usage or charge you even more in the name of being an active contributor to Global warming/warning?

Cheers,

Steph

Hi, friends

If the power factor is lower than 0.8 you will pay more than the consumed kw , Once I had pf.0.6 i had added power banks(capacitors), my bill decreased 30%

The MAXIMUM DEMAND will increase if POWER FACTOR is LOW, and billing will increase due to increase in MAXIMUM DEMAND. You will be forced to pay more for the the same energy.
