Model for a Pulse Detonation Turbo Driven Axle Engine

Probably need a really big muffler though....but you could fool your neighbors into thinking you had a .50 cal machine gun set up in the backyard...probably not a good idea...

lol,… back in the 90’s, I made a Ram jet. Talking about an external combustion engine…

a side bar note… I actually worked with a older fellow in California… he worked with NASA in his day and was part of the third reich that came over in operation paper clip.

At NASA he worked on what was called the pin wheel project. I used that idea to make a test bed model jig for testing it…

and wow, if I knew what I was getting myself into,… I may never have done it… lol

Interesting story, when I made the RAM jet, my research consisted of trips to the local library. No internet.

there was this fellows name that kept coming up. And in a some journal or tech paper there was a phone number from California in it. Out of curiosity I called it. And it it was him, can’t recall the name, but I had a number of interesting talks with him.

he came over in operation paper clip. He wasn’t German, he was actually a Russian Jew.

I called him a couple of times and one time, his wife answered and said, he’s out in the garden…and here’s how the conversation went.

i heard her yell to him,

her: ‘that nice boy from Wisconsin is on the phone’

him ‘I’ll be right in, don’t hang up’

her ‘I won’t’

him: ‘NO, I SAID DONT Hang UP’

They were going back and forth like this for a couple of times,… I thought it was cute…

then I heard a screen door open and slam shut, and what sound like a size 13 shoe clumping to the phone, when he got to the phone, he was all out of breath. lol.

we talk for like 2 hours… we hung up… then I realized I didn’t get around to asked him a uesti9n which was the reason I called in the first place. So I called him back and we talked for another hour and a half.

Pretty interesting guy. He was excited that someone took an interest…

he sent me some test data and stuff like that, I should look for it, I know a kept it..l

Before computer controlled engines in cars, you could be driving down the road, turn off the ignition for 2 to 3 seconds, while maintaining your foot on the throttle and car still in gear, turn the ignition back on,and get a loud backfire from the exhaust. The longer you let the car coast, and the harder you pushed on the throttle while switched off,the louder the bang.If you held it off too long, you could explode your muffler. This was because raw gas was allowed to accumulate in the exhaust system and ignited when ignition was turned back on.

Don't ask me how I know.

And potentially drive open an exhaust valve towards an unsympathetic piston.

On a motorcycle coasting down the southbound Waldo tunnel on US-101, you could get some nice shooting flames out of the open glass-packs along with the resonating report. So, I've heard.

Dude! Those were my stomping grounds back in the day too. I grew up on the peninsula and worked at Jacks Go Shop. Remember Fat Jack?

I was stationed at the Presidio of San Francisco from November 1985 to July of 1989. Lived in Novato, commuting via US-101 but on some days I'd take the long way home via CA-1.

Was Jack's Go Shop down there in the Mission District? I pretty much did my motorcycle gear shopping in the San Rafael area. There were a couple of independent shops there.

I was also a fan of the SMR. Back then, it would run from the Arco in Mill Valley, up to a break at the Stinson Beach overlook. Then a run up through the Samuel Taylor State Park and eat breakfast at the Les Printemps Cafe in Lagunitas. After breakfast would head up 1 towards Bodega Bay, Marshall, and Tomales.

Jack's was on El Camino in San Bruno right before it became Milbrea. We serviced just about everything including the Police 1000's for San Bruno and Burlingame.

I remember it well. Sometimes it wasn't deliberate, but caused by faulty ignition missing a few then coming back.
