Windows 10 Upgrade Issue

08/08/2025 3:00 AM

I have an old pc that is used as a stand alone computer for controlling a laser engraver. It has windows 7 on it, but to upgrade the engraver software I need to upgrade to windows 10. I attempted to upgrade from the Microsoft website but got an error message:[ C:\Users\Quantum Research\Downloads\Windows10Upgrade9252 (3).exe is not a valid Win32 application ]. Could someone please tell me why I get this message and more importantly how to resolve it?

Are you trying to run “Windows10Upgrade9252 (3).exe” while logged into win 7?

Try running “Windows101Uprade9252.exe” As administrator. Where did the space(3) come from?

If that doesn’t work, make a BOOT thumb drive and install windows 10 system. You will need a key. A windows 10 key.

I would suggest a better solution. The next version of laser software might require win 11 or higher.

If this is a business improvement, or even a hobby, why not buy a new win 11 box? Or at least upgrade to win 11. Or build one yourself. If it’s just used for engraving, a cheap motherboard and processor for win 11 will suffice.

I am not an expert. But have argued with operating systems for years.

Personally, win 7 and win 10, was and is much better than win 11. Win 11 require many more clinks to function than 7 or 10 did. And win 11 tracks and records every click you make on ALL of your devices.

Good luck.

Thanks Haymaker. I will give all suggestions a try; probably end up with build idea.

Each version of Windows requires much more ram than the previous one. It is likely that you don't have enough memory for the upgrade. 64 bit computers have been around for at least 10 years. No doubt Win11 requires a 64 bit machine.

You might want to try running your program in wine under Linux. I recently put Linux Mint on my brother's machine and it was instantly 10 times faster and with wine installed it will run many if not most older Windows applications.

And it's free. And it can be installed in dual boot mode, so you can reboot into Windows or Linux depending on your needs.

I ran into this issue earlier this year when TurboTax wouldn't run on the 15+/- YO old Compaq Windows10 laptop. Only 3gb ram and TurboTax said minimum of 4: bye-bye.

I am not a Windows person and the idea of buying something for one application was not pleasing. I did a Google search for cheapest Windows11 laptop and got a recommendation for an Acer at BestBuy for under $350. It's a minimal system, not a big SSD, plenty of RAM and it did my taxes just fine.

Now I am into trying to deploy a Windows application and needed to build a self-extracting file for Windows. The new little guy has been very useful in that endeavor.

Bottom line: not a terribly expensive alternative that might meet the OP's needs.

Regards,

Bill Lee
