Hurricane Resistant Structures

09/04/2025 8:26 AM

Ever notice how seashells are not swept away by the incoming waves? This shape makes them hug the shore more tightly when the waves hit them. Why not use this principle to build structures on the beaches?

The weigh of the water would hold them down, as would the wind pressure.

Conventional square based buildings cannot take the elements like a sea shell.

Perhaps engineers and architects have explored this before, but I am not familiar with it.

Comments are always welcome..(even pedantic ones )

Interesting observation. Now that you mention it, I too have noticed that. Some days the beach is covered with coral. Other days not so much, but seldom shells.

Great idea.

Used in the past where shelter and survival were far more important than cost, as money had not been invented (as far as the people building those houses were concerned).

Now, cost, views and useable volume are seen as more important. Others are there to help pick up the pieces afterward: insurance, charities, government agencies.

Your statement "Ever notice how seashells are not swept away by the incoming waves? " contradicts itself.
An Incoming wave is approching the beach so if it moved the seashells it would not "be away" The receding water would be reponsible for "away" !
Well, you did say I could be Pedantic !!

I anticipated your reply, and I knew exactly what to say, so I said nothing.

As you know, I will never argue with you.

Do you remember way back when there were structures called Bini Shells, a cast concrete dome some were used for Malls this side of the pond but they fell out of favour. Our storms are not called hurricanes, we call them cyclones, and they don't appear to do the damage or maybe it is because here the building codes are stricter.

One has only to look at the US home renovation shows on TV to see how much matchstick timber is used to build homes and the roofing employed there.

Maybe bring them back or make them circular like water tanks.

Just a thought: In scaling up, you have to consider that strength is proportional to the square of the scale, whereas weight is proportional to the cube of the scale. Increasing the size by a factor of ten increases the strength by a factor of 100, but the weight by a factor of 1000.

Most property damage is due to lack of property maintenance.. or building a structure within the tidal surge zone...Most people seem to think here in Florida we are constantly bombarded by hurricane winds, in fact it is a rare occurrence...On average you may get a glancing blow on your particular location about every 20 years, and a direct hit on your location about every 100 years...If you have trimmed your tree's properly and have a roof in good condition, you will probably only sustain minimal if any damage...If however you are building directly on the beach, then a hurricane proof home I think is a good idea....

I live in a timber built house about 80 miles from the North Sea coast where we get strong winds (here is a really flat area) but I have no worries, especially as my house is bolted together, not nailed together like most US houses.
Most houses in Germany are built out of brick or concrete except the old ones but most have been there 300-400 years.
Same in England, mainly brick. Hurricanes / Tornadoes are rare but you might lose some tiles off the roof, not your complete home.
So the simple answer lies in the way you build your homes, build in brick or concrete instead of bits of 4 x 2 timber nailed together. You only need to look at photos / videos of the damage in the US, only thing that stands out are the Chimmney stacks still standing...
In the USA, Hurricanes are like ex-wives, once they leave, your house is gone !
