Refrigerant for Geothermal Energy Recovery

09/15/2025 10:15 AM

I have an idea for saving money in the geothermal recovery field...This would be dealing with refrigerant loss through seals...the idea is to encapsulate the exterior of the bearings with a high pressure chamber that could be used to equalize the pressures between the inside, of let's say 700 psi, and the ambient surrounding atmosphere....

I think dry nitrogen for pressurizing the chamber with be a good choice, with pressure monitoring on both sides and a control that could increase or decrease the nitrogen pressure to minimize cross contamination of the two gases, the nitrogen could be sacrificial in this system as it is much less expensive than 410a or other gas mixes designed for purpose...How would you design the control system?

Hi SE, how often does a Seal leak and why? Maybe choosing a more expensive material used for the Seal and closer tolerances in the Housing would do more to eliminate potential leaks.
How often do seals leak in your cars A/C system ? Virtually never, the leaks come mainly from defective Radiators or Condensors, and that is on a moving object subject to all kinds of vibration, shocks etc. as opposed to a stationary object not exposed to the elements like a car is.
And your Encapsulating device would also need seals so I don't see any benefits, just add on costs.

Your on the right track…

For leaks at times, the compressor et al may be systemic or maybe a better word problematic. What I mean by ‘by others’, it could mean the system as a whole.

I’m looking at it a larger compressor such as Copeland type of compressor. As an example for cooling larger bulk material.

Where the compressor as well as the system itself is a ‘lemon’, that requires numerous recharging because the of failing performance.

And no matter how many service calls, these leaks are never really pin pointed or mitigated.

How would you seal this enclosure?

A seal enclosing another seal?

It sounds sort of redundant.

There are seals designed to seal tighter based on outside pressure, similar to the showerhead that has no threads it uses the internal pressure to seal tighter to the shaft.

We see people moving to R290 propane for refrigerant and higher temperature outputs, where the lower Global Warming Potential and lower price of propane make it attractive, despite the combustion explosion risk. A rotating turbo-compressor may be more efficient than oscillating scrolls and less likely to disturb seals with vibration.
