Cable Specifications For The Power Cable

12/12/2007 7:54 AM

Dear Sir,

I want to know the optimum cross section of the cable that I should connect from 240 KW generator to the synchronizing panel and from synchronizing panel to 440V/11KV transformer. Kindly also indicate the number of runs that is required and the general specifications of the cable.

In one of my present sites I have two runs of 120 Sqmm cable from a 200 KW generator to the panel and from panel to the similar transformer. At full load the cable is getting heated up. Please suggest me a solution to this also.

Thanxs in anticipation

<At full load the cable is getting heated up. Please suggest me a solution to this also.>

  1. Power factor correction at the load end of the cable.
  2. Double-up the cable, i.e. add more conductors to each phase.
  3. Renew the cable with one with a larger cross-section area.

could you please provide some more detail like length of cable from Gen to panel, panel to Trx, UG or in Air, temperature limit, Cu/Al, %VD allowed in your local regulation etc.

one another thing please you check that there is no loose connection then also cable be heated, and alluminium cable 1sqmm is for 1 ampere only and 1amps copper cable is 4 amps and more.

Hope you are an Electrical Engineer .The answer is based on that expectation . The cable manufacturers normally provide their rating depend on cable laying conditions. That is UG or OH ,Ambient temperature ,Depth of cable trench ,Thermal resistivity of soil ,ground temperature and other parameters. After considering the rating factor and specified rating of the cable manufacturer you can decide the size of the cable yourself. Only important factor is you should use only cable confirming to standard Specification and as far as possible of reputed make so that you get the correct rating as they specify.

Dear Sir,

What I replied earlier is that the size of the cable depend on the cable laying conditions to know the de rating factor. So please specify that then only you can select the correct size of cable .Hope you understand. If you want a proper answer your question must be complete and clear.

Dear Sir,

First clarification is that I am a mechanical engineer. What I am looking for is the thumb rule for deciding the cable size. Like one of the respondent has written that 1 Sqmm of Al cable can be used for 1 amps current carrying capacity and 1 Sqmm of Cu cable for 4 amps. Can we use this as a thumb rule.

I intend using Al cable to connect up the 240 KW generator with the panel and to the sychronising panel and finally to the transformer to hook up with the 11 KV grid. The total length of the cable will be about 30 meters. Major portion of the cable will be OH with very little UG.

Can you also give me the relation between the Wattage/HP to the current rating.

Hope i have framed my question correctly for a full reply.

Pls check the tightness of the cable termination. Pls lay more parallel cables per phase to increase the current carrying rate.
