UHMW for Inserts in Gasoline Engine?

02/28/2026 7:09 AM

I know I have posed this question before, and was given the reasons for not using UHMW for gasoline engines, but another polymer was suggested that was used in aircraft applications, but I cannot find it. I think it was SE that mentioned it. Do you remember SE?

Thanks to everyone. This forum has been a blessing to all members.

Group intelligence cannot be beaten, and we have the best group I have ever known.

No matter how obscure or trivial the question, it yields results.

That is the reason ants and other insects have survived for millions of years,

even longer that dinosaurs.

May this forum survive as long.

I don't know, according to this, it swells when exposed to gasoline or oil.

"UHMW swells when exposed to gasoline and oil, developing 2-4% dimensional growth that binds moving parts. Delrin maintains stability in these environments. Red Flag Warning: Never use UHMW in continuous fuel contact or Delrin with strong oxidizers under stress."
