Plate Heat Exchanger Gasket Failure Issues & Best Replacement Solutions in India?

04/22/2026 8:33 AM

Hello Engineers,

We are currently working on multiple industrial applications involving plate heat exchangers in HVAC and process industries, and we have been facing recurring issues related to PHE gasket performance and failure.

Some common challenges we are observing:

  • Frequent gasket leakage under high temperature conditions
  • Reduced sealing efficiency over time
  • Compatibility issues with replacement gaskets
  • Maintenance downtime due to improper gasket fitting

We are evaluating different materials like NBR, EPDM, and Viton gaskets, but performance varies depending on application conditions.

I would like to understand from industry experts:

  1. What are the key factors to consider when selecting the right PHE gaskets for industrial applications?
  2. Which gasket material performs best for high-temperature and chemical applications?
  3. Are OEM-compatible replacement gaskets reliable in long-term usage?
  4. Any recommendations for improving gasket life and sealing performance?

We have experience working with plate heat exchanger systems and replacement parts, and in some cases, we have seen that proper gasket selection and installation significantly improve performance and reduce downtime.

Looking forward to expert insights and practical suggestions from the community.

Thanks in advance.

In pulp & paper industry, the biggest observed problem is field repair operations, as opposed to material selection. If the application fouls or is abused, it needs to be disassembled, and therein lies the challenge.

While plate heat exchangers are the most efficient, this is of little help when working with varying process fluids of varying cleanliness.

One go to design, expensive but effective is the spiral heat exchanger, Alfa Laval is a designer & fabricator for years in severe duty.

ALL application notes must be followed precisely, especially tightening sequence and torque values to ensure uniform expansion of gasket with the base.

Material choice is dependent on internal contents and external environmental conditions.

Hi srjofficial,

Welcome to CR4. My experience with gaskets is from personal auto and motorcycle. I think my Yamaha motorcycle had a metal gasket on the cylinder. With normal fiber gaskets the important thing is to get the old one removed completely. That is difficult and time consuming but essential. Also the proper torque must be applied in the proper sequence.

I recently replaced a water pump in a 1996 Dodge Dakota truck. I decided to replace the thermostat while it was very accessible, but one of the 2 bolts would not tighten down properly. Oiling the bolt and exchanging with the other bolt didn't help. After using another bolt holding the dipstick, I concluded that one hole was threaded with English threads, and the other one with Metric!

I have a gasket maker compound in a tube that may be a silicon rubber compound. I don't know if that is still available or whether it would work in your application.

This issue is quite common in plate heat exchangers and is often related to high water hardness. Minerals such as calcium and magnesium can form scale deposits over time, which not only reduce heat transfer efficiency but may also compress the gaskets, leading to frequent leakage problems.

Regular water quality monitoring and proper scale prevention measures are recommended to maintain system performance. If you would like to explore suitable water treatment solutions, feel free to visit our website: https://aguatopone.mx

It's been a while since I last posted.

Sounds like you should start with the basics of the surface mating . Are surfaces " flat " and " true " within tolerances? Gaskets and "O"rings don't tolerate warping and pitting.https://www.eastwood.com/garage/the-best-way-to-measure-surfaces-for-true-flatness/
