Harmonics Generation in Induction Furnace

12/12/2007 1:02 PM

Dear Sirs,

1) I would like to know which type of inverter ( 6 pulse / 12 pulse) generates harmonics in Induction Furnaces.

2) I have seen the people used isolation transformers to block harmonics in Induction Furnace. Is it correct method. Suggest the methods to suppress harmonics in induction furnaces.

Dear Shivakumar,

Your query could be answered better if you could give detailed information regarding your job requirement. The KW capacity requirement of Induction furnace and the frequency of inverter supply used. All inverters generate harmonics and the most common and simple method of harmonic reduction is achieved by LC filter. A simple tuned off Filter or Series resonant series element and parallel resonant shunt element LC circuits can be used for harmonic filtering.RC filter in parallel with transformer secondary is a good solution.

Dear Abraham Sir,

Thanks for your valuable clarifications.

I would like to know in what way RC Filter is superior than LC Filter.

How to connect this R & C. in series or parallel.

Both will generate harmonics. 6 pulse will lead to predominant 5th & 7th harmonics and 12 pulse will lead to 11th and 13th. The latter is less problematic to your smaller loads. Both are not good for PF capacitors. you can go for two types of filtering 1. That will block generated harmonics from entering mains; 2. ground them out. The other best method is "Active Filtration" but very very costly. Much literature available on net to read.

What in the heck are "PF" capacitors??? The only pf I am aware of are picofarads and that does not make sense in this application.

Bill

OK I THINK I just figured it out. PF being power factor Right?? Damn the mnemonics!! FULL SPEED AHEAD!!
