Electromagnetic vs Ultrasonic Flowmeter: When to Use Which?

08/20/2026 11:32 PM

Electromagnetic vs ultrasonic flowmeters is a common comparison when selecting a flow measurement technology for industrial liquid applications. Both technologies can provide accurate, non-mechanical flow measurement, but they use fundamentally different measurement principles and have different application requirements.

The queston is:How to Choose ?

There are some fluids that are not suitable for an electromagnetic flow meter.

There are some piping installations that are not suitable for ultrasonic Doppler flow measurements, or for that matter, for magnetic flow meters.

There are many other flow measurement technologies that are much less expensive with varying degrees of accuracy.

Flow Measurement Engineering Handbook by Richard W. Miller gives you a logical method to select suitable methods to measure your fluid.
