On-Line Masters Degrees?

12/26/2007 1:47 PM

Sir's, I have been contemplating continued education but lack the time and resources for full-time enrollment. One consideration is online Masters in Manufacturing Engineering in reputable school that is now online. My concern is that Labs are not required and a thesis is not mandatory...! Will this be a hindrance in my development as a Professional? Please comment!

It sounds like it isn't worth the paper it's printed on.

I'd be wary of any online or correspondence courses. I guy I work with has wasted good money on a correspondence course...(I've been helping him with it on occaision)it is full of errors, there is no practical and his work is clearly marked by someone who doesn't know the subject....

I suggested he send one test paper back for re-marking as it was fine but had been marked 'D'... it came back 'A+' !!!!

There are that kind of firms out there, one have to look at accredited on line colleges,

Alot of well reputable colleges are going on line, MIT for one, and with this age of lack of time for continuing education. its a trend that is going to continue.

Obviously, a degree from the Mass. Inst. of Technol. would be more impressive and open more doors for you in the future. Why not check it out instead. Or, CalTech or Stanford/UC Berkeley programs. Though many of the reputable schools require some course work taken at the university mixed with some online courses.

MIT as well as other collegew have I do not remember exactly what they call it. But they have thier course studies are open on the web. You can not get a degree from it. but its very informational. And to obtain a degree, all of the reputable colleges that offer online courses, due require actually classtime on their campuses. mostly just a single semester.

There are a few exceptions - very few - where you can earn a real Masters in a distance education program. You might look at Georgia Tech (I would never call the Ramblin' Wrecks reputable but they are highly respected) for their program. One of the keys is to look for distance rather than online.

Maybe it would be better to ask a reputable school that oftens the desired program, and degree level, on an in-class basis, within the continental United States, if they would consider offering that program online, as well?

MIT has had on-line courses for a number of years and the technical instruction is excellent. I agree however that Ronald should shop around for a good technical school. If he is looking at a non-technical area (eg: MBA), then the range of schools to choose from is quite large.

quite a few college online course require some type of classroom attendance at their facility. Which I believe is good because the institution is making an investment and actually has a campus

Re: On-Line Masters Degrees?

Some of the classes I took working on my degree were online through the college. The benefit of going to class at 2:00 in the morning was a bonus at the time. I had a real live prof teaching the class so I had someone to email, call or go talk to. We also had live online class sessions once a week. I would personally rather physically attend classes on campus, in a classroom with a real live prof in front teaching the technical intensive courses, especially were labs would/should be part of the curriculum. Also from my own experience the online courses took more time per credit hour than the classroom attended ones. Another concern you should look at is how much of the credits that you earn at this online school will transfer and be recognized by other notable colleges should you decide to transfer. I wouldn't expect 100% either. Educate yourself first by researching college reviews and comments from other sources other than the college itself. Check with some human resource people from the industry that you would like to work at after your degree and get their opinion of the value they might place on that particular degree obtain from this online degree coursework. Good luck with your Master degree!

They claim to be Middle States accredited and that seems OK. See if places like Civil Service or the US military accept the degrees as qualifying. You might also pick up a copy of John Bear's book on distance learning (sorry, I don't remember the title but John Bear is the guru on what's good and what's fake).
