Chornobyl Remembered

04/26/2005 8:00 AM

Today marks the 19th anniversary of the nuclear disaster near Chornobyl, a Ukranian town that was then part of the Soviet Union. While searching for some perspective on this subject, I came across a collection of papers, studies, and publications about Chornobyl. It was interesting to learn that just months before this tragedy, Vitaly Sklyarov, Minister of Power for the Ukranian SSR, stated that "The odds of a meltdown are one in 10,000 years. The plants have safe and reliable controls that are protected from any breakdown with three safety systems."

Chernobyl?

04/27/2005 1:37 PM

I always spelled it Chernobyl - not sure which version is anglicanized. Anyway, the significance of the Chernobyl tragedy has truly been downplayed. Conservative estimates state that 60,000 people have died from exposure (some even go as high as 400,000) and a "ring of death" 30 miles around the plant.
