All sci-fi references aside (e.g., Romulan, artificial singularity engines; doomsday weapons; alternate universe portals), the scariest thing I find about this story are the urban legends of John Titor, the time traveler who claimed that his device used an artifical black hole. You could argue that CERN was working on this 5 or 6 years ago, or that it could be happenstance; anyway, kiddies, pretty neat stuff.
