constuction of wind turbine tower

01/01/2008 12:59 PM

Can anyone tell me, what is the best free standing post (can last for 20 years or so. Ocean view enviroment.) I can make(or use.) for my windmill (windmill blades 9 fts across.)about 150 fts tall. ( I have strong wind, sometime up to 110mph.) And where can I purchase such tower? Thanks in advance.

Hello Guest,

Please advise your blade design - single blade, multiblade etc. A picture of the type you intend would greatly assist.

Advise your expected output, because that will relate to the type of tower needed.

Do you have close neighbours?

Is the wind mainly on-shore, or off-shore?

Kind Regards....

Hello Ace Boeringa,

Your short answer is as confusing as the original question.....

The wind turbines that I have been involved with (like this one) had a 46,000kg nacelle (without blades) so the strength and dimensions of the tower is proportional to that. Whats yours?

Considering your proposed height (which I doubt, given the blade diameter), you may need planning permission too!

I can provide names of manufactures in both Northern and Southern Hemisphere!

Have you thought of using a vertical axis windmill like a Darrieus? No tower is required & you don't have to worry about pointing into the wind. It also means that your generator is on the ground.

interesting question. as an architect involved in "green" construction including energy sources, One finds this post to be intriguing enough to read and respond. The scale of the project seems to be more in the line of a commercial rather than residential nature. the solution, One suspects, will be rather expensive, if this is indeed a residential project. A 150 foot tower with a multi-ton wind driven generator (located on the ground or not) will be quite a vertical cantilever in a 110 mph wind. And, as Beej50 observed, a structure such as this, depending on where you are located, will be subject to plan review and permitting authorities. I agree with Ace. You aren't going to find someone to design this for you here. Contact Beej and get references for engineers who design these things for a living.

Take a close look at this type...MUCH more flexible with varying wind conditions, and NO need for anywhere near 150' height.

http://www.quietrevolution.co.uk/

There are several other vertical blade type wind generation designs, and putting your generator on the ground will help you avoid large weight at such heights. Also, maintenance will be very difficult for you at 150' in the air if this is a residential application and you are not in the business of servicing a wind farm with their specialized lift truck equipment.

Also, if you are close to ocean breezes that are generally from/to, you may wish to place a near-ground cutcher type collector between your home and garage - like this one:

Good luck! and post us your results and pics someday ;)

Another question- How much room for a base? Don't know about free standing posts, but guywire towers it's a factor. You going deep or wide?
