In South Korea, interesting pocket gadgets can be found that translate English into the Korean language and script, and back again.

How about a similar thing for the Chinese languages?

You might get some hints from www.physorg.com. It is mostly primary science but that has to come before the technology.

We may not hear about it this year but something that intrigues me is building from the atomic and molecular level. I read somewhere that this is in it's infancy even now. If perfected the Startrek "replicator" can become reality. In a hundred years even a highschool student may understand exactly how they work.

Some of this stuff may sound over the top. At my advanced age nothing does anymore. One reason for this is that a guest of honor at the launch of the first moon mission was Mr. Charlie Smith or Bartow Florida. Charlie was brought to this country aboard a sailing ship as a slave at the age of 7.

I think innovations like this will become a reality in the coming year (I know, quite pricey yet), but before long competition will make this thing really go. As bp01 says, don't run out to buy one of the first ones (but then, if it really takes off, think about what serial number 001 might be worth 20 years henceforth). Tesla, unlike predecessors, has got, I think, a viable product.

It's a foregone conclusion that the electronics industry will have many fascinating products. The gaming industry will be REALLY big this year (for those who follow it). Holographic gaming is right around the corner folks.

Nanotechnology, while yet in its infancy, will be coming of age (look for big things here). I think this will be a prime mover in medical technology, including such Startrek marvels as the "replicator" that you mentioned.

IMHO "biofuels" will decline as an alternative fuel. Why? Because it provides a diminishing return. It's ineffeicient, polluting, and detrimental to food production- both human and livestock. Perhaps not directly related to the poster's original question but just had to interject it anyway.

Anyway, back at the technology ranch- The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is scheduled to come on line this year. I think vermin called it the BASC (Big ass super collider). Look for exciting advances in high energy physics as a result.

All I know is not to buy the first one that hits the market as it, whatever "it" is will get cheaper.

I guess you could plan on selling "it" to a museum someday.

Actually, I suspect that any real scientific breakthroughs will come in the realm of medicine, specifically stem cell research. Any technological breakthroughs will be enhancements of current technology, such as WiMAX coming out as a wireless technology, but even then, it will not immediately supplant current offerings, such as cellular data and WiFi.

I hope we see some advances in the transportation field, including alternate energy (to stop burning petroleum for fuel - too valuable as a synthesis feedstock for that) and lighter materials (more use of aluminum and carbon fiber reinforced plastic). This is not just for automobiles - over-the-road cargo haulers would benefit too, and the freight surcharges would hold steady if not drop (in a perfect world, that is...).

traffic is a heavy problem. petroleum has been going up to 100usd/berral. scienists can invent a tiny atomic energy generator to power the vehicles.
