Celebrating the Eiffel Tower

03/31/2006 4:00 PM

Today marks the 117th anniversary of the innauguration of the Eiffel Tower, the entrance arch for the Exposition Universelle of 1889. Here are some fun facts about this magnificent metal structure, courtesy of Wikipedia:

- Solar heating can causes the tower to expand up to 3.25 in. (8 cm).

- Protecting the tower from rust requires the application of 50 tons of paint every seven years.

- In 1925, a con artist sold the Eiffel Tower for scrap - twice!

Scrap

If I'm not mistaken the tower was supposed to be a temporary structure just for a Worlds Fair and then torn down. I'm glad someone had the foresight to save such a unique building.
