01/03/2008 10:06 PM

I am going to purchase a new internet security suite for my home pc. I would like to get everyones opinion on the best suite for the $$$. I am thinking about BitDefender or possibly TrendMicro.

I use trend micro pc cillin security 8.55. bla bla.

Never had an issue with it and in my mind it performs really well. Don't rely on just one programme, have several doing different things. I also used to use prevx1 for malware and adware. That is absolutely ace and I still use it now and again.

Biggest must is safe behaviour on line, if you run windows have the firewall and av switched on. Try to use firefox instead of IE and last but not least, don't trust that peter norton.

This is only an opinion but it happens to be mine.

In my opinion, Trend Micro is the best, you know, it's the old Black Ice technology, improved..

I have tried Norton and McAfee over the years, but I have been using Trend Micro PCCillin for the last 4 years or so with absolutely no complaints. It also does not have nearly as much 'junk' running in the background like Norton of McAfee.

While it catches more junk than both of them running in your foreground

Exactly, with my older pc's I would get so frustrated with all of the processes being run in the background with other security suites that would eat up system resources. This was a real aggrivation for gaming

When I used to game, not so much now as I grew up, I used to make sure where I was was safe and switched everything else off including firewall and AV. As long as you start clean and you verify that where you are connected is safe, you should be ok. Switch e-mail off as well and have all processes that could run automatically switched to confirm first.

Not foolproof but worked for me for years. Nowadays I would probably not dare to do it like that as the threat is bigger.

PCCillin doesn't make any noticible impact on my systems performance, so I leave it running. I don't leave email open and taking bandwidth (TX/RX). I do run a hardware firewall vs. a software firewall as well. I also ran msconfig and set alot of automatic start services to manual, so they turn on when the application that actual needs it fires up. Some services I turned off that I never use. I also unchecked alot of the programs set to start up on power on that are unecessary and running in the system tray. Little things like that make a big difference. Also increasing paging file helps.

Norton slows the PC down too much, but its a good program.

I personally prefer Kaspersky 7.0 as you can use for a year in test for nothing, then buy it. Has a firewall as well as anti virus.....

It also wins most of the European comparison tests, surprise, surprise!!!
