How to tell if grinder pump is problem

01/05/2008 4:41 PM

Notice water dripping from sewer pipe in basement and this week the smell has become awful - toilet in 1st floor bathroom is not flushing properly. Call plumber - he came out looked in my basement , walked in my yard, didn't open any access to pipes but then he said it was the grinder pump and he didn't know anything about them. Would send someone else on Monday. Don't they have to open an access pipe to try to ascertain the problem. The alarm on the grinder pump has not gone off. Please tell me what type plumber do I need to call? I have 2 small children and need to get this fixed as soon as possible.

Have you tried the website of the manufacturer of the grinder pump? All you need is a name or model number and google it.

Often they have trouble shooting info on there and if not, at least they will give you their contact details.

The more you know yourself first, the less the plumbers are going to be able to "screw" you over.

If it is just a grinder pump to break up the raw sewage before it enters the pipe, I cannot see how that one on the 1st floor can cause water dripping in the basement but hey, I am no plumber either. Just sounds odd to me.

Hey all thanks for the comments - moral support always helps when one is in a pickle. I was really starting to panic because that plumber told me it was going to cost a minium of $5000. to replace the pump.

After some more in depth research on line in local area found out that the city waste department will not only come out and see what is wrong but if pump is bad they will replace it. Guess I got a really crummy plumber guy who just wanted to rip someone off. But thanks to Clifton Park Waste department I will now find out what is wrong and be able to get rid of the strong sewer smell in my house.

10 billion flies cannot be wrong, nothing bad about sewage smells. only kidding of course, I am very happy you got some life line thrown by the waste department.

Hope it won't cost you and it is fixed fast.

Take care

Congratulations for your diligence! After that foul-smelling drip is cleaned up, allow me to recommend a product called "Ozium" to get rid of the odor. It is worth some trouble to find, because it works very well. My local supplier is an Auto parts store.

$5000? WALOOB . Macerators start in the Screwfix catalogue at £200GBP including local taxes (usual disclaimer)! Would it be 1/2 a day's work to change it? And another 1/2 day to fix the leaking pipe?

Change the plumber. The con is on.......

You might consider reporting the plumber to the local trading standards office (or whatever the equivalent is where you live...) ? Just to give them a 'heads up' ..after all he never got around to ripping you off...but he sure will fleece someone...

I agree with your sentiment entirely.

However, living in the UK, you must also know all these tv programs where they "catch" them doing their con work on camera and where the program makers submit this to the trading standards.

How often are they still at it months or years after? They keep doing it because the "incentive" not to is non existent. Pond life, or scum of the earth, is something we as customers, need to arm ourself against. I would rather see money spent at keeping the public informed about them with handy tips and hints how to deal with them. The only reason why they can con people, and keep on finding new once to target, is because of the general public's ignorance.

They could publish a monthly newsletter, freely distributed via supermarkets, libraries, police stations, hospitals and all others you can name, which keeps people informed about the latest reported offences, photos and practises and then a guideline to the people as to how to deal with them.

General info by trading standards with phone numbers of approved traders. Guidelines on how to try for yourself to determine what it could be (for those that want to) and police information on where to go to report them.

I think they could easily finance it if they cut some of the idiotic money wasting activities they participate in.

There, done it again. Sunday morning, sun is out, heart is thumping away and blood pressure through the roof. I think I have to lay down now

Greetings from EGYPT

Grinder pumps connected to domestic basin are usually of heavy duty type and rarely needs to be repaired. That is why your G pump has an alarm seting.

Well try to get the maker name and address of the grinder on its tag plate and contact them using the the phone guide

It seams that your plumbing system is jammed somewhere, you need to call some plumber who cares to solve the problem, the one who came to you is what we call in EGYPT a "Doctor Plumber "

Let me know about the news: Epumpman21@yahoo.com
