2-4.5V to 5V, 1A Boost DC-DC Converter Circuit.

01/07/2008 4:07 PM

Hi Guys!

I am looking for a circuit for a 2-4.5V to 5V, 1A boost DC-DC converter circuit using discreet components. I have searched and found so many circuits. They are simple but they use SMT/SMD components which a regular hobbyist like me has no access to. Well, at least here in the Philippines. I do not mind how bulky the circuit could be.

I will be using the circuit to power up my iPod during long travel with the convinence of using regular AA battery.

Thanks

If there is a circuit you like ...just build it with the same component values but in leaded components rather than SMD... It won't make any difference unless it is running at a relatively high frequency. Inductors/transformers are usually the difficult components.
I know you said discrete components...but maxim do some cute chips with good ap notes and I've always found their stuff does what it says...

There is one circuit I like, it is based on the LM2623A chip but then again, it is on SMD format and there is no equivalent leaded format. :(

This circuit uses a single 4.7uH inductor. I like Maxim products too, but they only sell to big manufacturers here... not to hobbyist.

Don't you have access to distributors like RS and Farnell?
Dunno if the regular mail would get to you..I could always get a chip here and mail it to you? Sm devices aren't too bad to work with ...you can always stick 'em on their back with a dpot on duper glue or epoxy and wire straight to their stubby little legs . As long as you have a decent soldering iron...
Of course it was esier before we had all this 'lead free' crap...I remember when solder used to melt .

thanks for the reply.

I've placed my order at RS Components Philippines. The components are expensive though because they have required minimum quantity. I've ordered the LM2623, 1N5818 and some 4.7uH Power Inductors.

It's going to be a mix of SMD and Discreet components, I will just use all components as if they are SMD and mount them all in the foil side of a single sided PCB board.

Wish me luck and I hope this works. :D

"...they have required minimum quantity..."

OK, extended travel, an iPod for entertainment, so unless you are driving, or in cramped or otherwise restricted quarters, I sense an opportunity here to use that travel time to whip up a few more to sell to others with similar needs to recoup that expense...

The LM 2623 has only 8 pads, some of which are to be joined together. You should be able to carefully solder a couple of cm of tinned copper wire to each of the SMT pads, and feed the other ends to a circuit board. Not a professional solution, but OK for a "few of" hobbyist production.

Alternatively solder wires to the board and bend them to match the SMT pads. Tin the ends and sweat the SMT pads to the ends of the wires

If finding leaded components is too difficult, you might want to consider buying some prototyping boards from Schmartboard. http://www.schmartboard.com

You might find just the thing you need to construct your circuit.

Good luck with your quest.

Yey! The LM2623 arrived... man it is too small... smaller than a 1/8 Watt resistor!
