Hello Signode,

I am assuming you mean a 5KVA Petrol Alternator.

These normally have a brand name on a nameplate somewhere.

You have not stated whether air-cooled or water-cooled.

If you want long life, an air-cooled Petrol engine should be up to its normal operating temperature, before full loads is applied. This would take a couple of minutes.

If you don't worry about long life, an air-cooled Petrol engine could have the full load applied within 15 seconds, but it will not last for many hours, before it is needing overhaul.

Likewise a water-cooled Petrol engine should be up to its normal operating temperature, before full loads is applied. This would take about five minutes.

If you want long life, a water-cooled Petrol engine could have the full load applied within 20 seconds, but it will not last for many hours, before it is needing overhaul.

QROT = Quick Rule Of Thumb: For such a small unit, you can usually place the palm of your hand on the engine head, near to but not touching the spark plug, and when it is too hot to keep your hand there, you know the internals of that engine have reached close to normal operating temperature.

Some of these units have a temperature gauge fitted, with the operating temperature marked.

In your own case, if you have the unit, check the make/model/serial number, read the manual issued with the equipment.

If the manual is missing, contact the makers or their local agents.

Kind Regards....
