Start by writing down what features you want and how the system is to operate.

You should also find out what you can get (first locally because support should be available)

Then you must compare and see where you must reduce expectations or where work around can be done.

We had to build big antennas to enable detecting at a distance of more than 2 ft (but technology may have improved drastically in resent years).
