Measuring the Thickness of a Coating

04/06/2006 2:05 PM

Leo Vermeulen writes:
I am searching for an equipment that is able to measure the thickness of a coating.

The coating is done on aluminized PET foil.
The thickness is between 1 and 2 microns.
The coating is transparent but with an absorption maximum at 420 nm.

The equipment will be used during the coating process as the thickness is crucial for the concept of the final product.

Hi, You might use RBS (Rutherford-Backscattering) if You access to some low-energy accelerator people ( a few 100 keV He+ -> foil head on collisions ). Electron beam works also. Uwe

Coating Thickness

Panametrics makes several meters and transducers which use ultrasonics to measure thicknesses of coatings by way of echos from boundary layers. Apparently they have been acquired by Olympus, and their website is Olympus

Hello I am technoconsultant. I have a good and cheep idea. please wite me on my email.

Hello. I am a technical consultant. I have a good and cheap (inexpensive) idea. Please write to me on my e-mail :

Spot the difference.

Invest in a good dictionary and thesaurus. Automatic spell-checking cannot find mistakes if they are real words used in the wrong context.
Compare:

There - in that place
Their - belonging to them
They're - they are

To succeed you must master language. Native speakers may catch you out, of course, but incorrect spelling shows sloppiness and is inexcusable. Good luck !

Possible solutions

Are you looking for an "in process" solution or are you pulling samples and having a technician inspect them. If the latter, a decent optical comparitor or a microscope will work for you.
