Chewing Gum

04/08/2006 12:37 PM

How can you remove chewing gum that people seem to like to dispose of on our sidewalks. Everybody I talk to does not like to step in it, but they have admitted to doing the same (disposing of gum on sidewalks). What can be done short of banning gum sales? Muratic acid does not work (hence the saying do not swallow gum for it will stay in you tummy for six years), power washing removes the bulk of gum but there is still a stain and is time consuming to use! There must be a way to do it that is environment friendly and easy to use. All help will benefit all paths that we walk! Thanks Mark Wesson

Use a freezing agent, such as dry ice. Freeze the gum and remove. If a stain remains, use diluted muratic or hydrocloric acid to remove.

You can use vetable oil and a nylon brush to take the gum into solution with the oil. Then use detergent to get the oil out.

Try Citraforce from Lanotec. It is mostly D-linonene. It works.

I saw that on the news a while back...

Looked pretty cool - Since then I've also seen the results first hand. It's the only thing I've seen that removes the gum and the stain.

Dirty Jobs

Mike Rowe hosts a show called "dirty jobs" on the Discovery Channel. In one episode he examined the art of gum removal in a major us city. It can be done effectively with the right tools.
