Plastics With UV Resistance and Transparency

01/09/2008 9:24 AM

Greetings all,

I am looking into plastics and need to know about some plastics that have high UV resistance and are also transparent. So far the only leads I have are Polyarylate and Polyetherimide. If there are other plastic types that also fit this description please let me know. Also I need the plastic to be crafted into a mostly cylindrical shape, about 12 inches tall, with a circular/ovular opening in the area of 2-4 inch diameter, so a company(s) that do this would also be useful to me. Any information is greatly appreciated, and if further information is needed, please let me know.

Polycarbonate sheeting is widely used for see-through roofs for conservatories and the like. Further research opportunities may be found at any local major home-improvements supplies retailer.

Polycarbonate is a tough transparent plastic, however it doesn't have such good resistance to UV light that I know of. I guess by saying resistance to UV, I mean actual resistance to generated UV light--such as from a LED or other light/energy source, not stray rays from the sun.

I would think that any type of plastics with the proper amount of UV Stabilizer additives would do the job. Polycarbonate is well known transparency, also Polypropylene and High Impact Polystyrene. The only thing is, the more UV Stabilizer additives are added - the less transparent. There's even transparent PVC as well, which is more thermally stable than other plastics. That's my exprience with plastic films at least. Hope my 2 cents help.

Acrylic is mentioned as the material of choice in terms of processability (can be molded or cast [for optical clarity, or fuzziness depends on need] extruded etc for ribbon installations, can be potted to make water resistant etc.) and cost for items like pool and spa lights, highway markers etc when used to focus, cover and protect LED's; even including the more powerful LED units of today versust the past -

good luck

You should be able to get Acrylic thats Museum qrade UV blocking and crystal clear. It won't be cheap. If you want something that's more durable and bullet proof use Lexan which is even more expensive.

Good Luck
