Corrosion Tests on Inconel Alloys 604 & 617

01/09/2008 10:00 AM

We are currently running tests on inconel alloys utilizing solution aqua regent for comparison of treated vs. untreated samples. We are looking to start w/ untreated sample and are trying to achieve total destruction of oxide layer w/minimal disturbance of substrate. Is an aqua regent suitable for this type of test or does anyone have any alternate suggestions?

Do you mean Aqua Regia?

Literally: "Royal Water"

a mixture of nitric and hydrochloric acids that dissolves gold or platinum.

So named for it's ability to dissolve noble metals.

There is a potion called 'green death' that is used in chemical corrosion resistance testing. It's a mixture of nitric and sulphuric acids with ferric sulphate added (hence the green colour). Only a few specialised nickel-rich alloys can withstand it!
