HCl corrosion resistant Liquid ring vacuum pump needed...

01/10/2008 8:41 AM

Colleagues-

Does anyone know of a manufacturer of a HCl-resistant Liquid ring vacuum pumps? The materials of construction I'm looking for are a glass lined steel, ceramic, plastic, hastelloy, or inconel liquid ring impeller and pump housing. All of the suppliers I've talked to either mistakenly recommend a stainless steel pump (which from my consultant's experience for this exact application does NOT work) or cannot accomodate my request. I have a discontinued SIHI pump now that works beautifully, but I have nightmares what would happen should this pump fail. I do not require a high capacity pump, as the current pump I'm using is only 3hp.

Any leads would be greatly appreciated.

Hi DuffEng,

Your consultant is correct - Chloride attacks stainless steels. I worked at a batch plant where we had 3 or 4 SIHI vacuum pumps. When we needed another one for a new process, we looked for used equipment. This may be a solution for you as there are a lot of used process equipment sellers out there. It may be that you could find another SIHI pump like the one you already have.

and there are many more...

Best Regards,

Mike

In a past life I used Nash liquid ring vacuum pumps with and without an eductor assist. The HCl was handled by using high alk well water and a modified- once through flush system. If it is somewhat steady state, you can add makeup water as fast as required by watching the outlet pH.

I hope that makes sense.
