Super-Strength Concrete

01/10/2008 12:06 PM

I noted here within the last couple of months some comments regarding the development of super-strength (~60,000 psi) concrete in Iran. More recently, the construction of the Trump Tower in Chicago was highlighted, and mention was made of super-strength concrete being used in this project.

Does anyone know what the key secret ingredients used in the production of such concrete are likely to be. I'd love to be able to use a few drops or pinches of these per bag of ordinary Sakrete to come up with some revolutionary new products.

Thanks.

If people start passing around the "key Secret ingredients",

They wont be any more....now will they.

IP like that would not have been cheap to develop.

No they wouldn't be secret but they would be fun to play with.

I can guess: High strength whiskers (sorry Del); highly compressive aggregate; aggregate that is in sizes and shapes that fill all voids and resist crack propagation; low water mixes with slow cure times.

pure conjecture

No...you don't want to use Del's whiskers....would lead to Cat-astophy...

Don't forget that "microfibers" can also be polymer molecules. Acrylics have long been used for additives in concrete. If you can find a non-cured sample of the "super concrete", extract the water-soluble portion of the material and run an FTIR, GPC, etc to determine what additives are present. Some polymers can be considerably stronger than steel on a weight basis.

WHY NOT CONTACT THE PORTLAND CEMENT ASSOC. OR LIKE INDUSTRY GROUP?

EXPOXY FORTIFICATION ADDITIVE IS ONE WAY....any Cement supplier will have some sort of formalization for high strength concrete.

Could it be 'walnut shell powder or mesh' ? Possibly. Check the website of www.ecoshell.com and the strength of walnut shell media? Contact Rebecca if you would like to order @ 530-824-8794. We are the largest walnut shell media manufacturers in the world.

Thanks Rebecca. I realize that you market walnut shell particulates of all mesh sizes, but can you provide some concrete (no pun intended) evidence that walnut shell powder has an impact on concrete strength? Your website does no address this.
Thanks.

Hello Anicholas,

This was just a suggestion. Our MSDS is on our website...and that should tell you or an engineer who has specification knowledge on cement if it might be an application.

Because of our client/confidentiality ethics, I cannot reveal any one company that would be approaching this idea. But it is an open territory to explore.

Hi there, We know it has been trialed in the industry and we are willing to provide any samples required to do your own R&D on walnut shell media at any grit or powder as a filler. It has been requested for trials, you can contact us through numbers on the website and ask for myself or Helen. Mention this conversation and we can get trial applications out to your company.

This past year, the 2000 ft "Chicago Spire" construction was also started. It will be several hundred feet taller than the Trump Tower. It also will be made of concrete. They must be planning on using super-duper-strength concrete for that one.
