Lack of wovern carbon fiber

04/11/2006 9:10 AM

Craig Wiese writes:
I work in a small company that makes custom airplane parts etc. I can not seem to locate woven carbon fiber anywhere. I know all the big boys are buying up all of it. But it seems to me that more companies would be producing it. Seems to be a money making operation. Thanks for any answers on this.

We are seeing the same for drag racing parts. 70% price increase by some manufacturers of wings. Teams with "unlimited" budgets who can't make enough funny car bodies for all of their drivers to have the latest design. Some part of the supply chain must have been interupted. It all started shortly after last year's huricanes, but I have no clue if there is a correlation.

Jeff, you should get with the aerospace mfgs or other industry mfg's that deal with carbon pre-preg that requires certification. Some of this material can only be recert'd so many times and can expire. You may be able to pick up material that is just as good, that just isn't certifiable any more due to industry specifications. (Unless of course, your industry required the same level of certification)

Carbon fibre supply

04/12/2006 3:03 PM

My supplier tells me that, since the deconstruction of the World Trade Centre, the requirements of the so-called war on terror have meant that military contractors, especially aeroplane manufacturers, have been buying all the carbon fibre that is available. They may even get priority, I wouldn't know.
