Wanted: Very Strong Epoxy Resin

01/14/2008 12:02 AM

Hi,

i need to patch some gaps in a sandblasting booth and I understand there is a "super Bondo" that could be suitable for the task. I was told in the USA it is called something like Adtech? but I have had no success in Googling it. I am in Northern Thailand where the lifestyle is great but sourcing raw materials successfully gets you in line for the Marco Polo award.

are you applying on the outside or inside?

For sand blasting you do not need strong, you need tough and rubbery so the sand bounces off. Harder stuff erodes more easily.if these are holes blasted by the sand there will be many incipient holes, so often a rubbery liner is best?

Hi Aurizon,

You are right. Cured epoxy resin will be hard but it may get abraded due to continuous sand blasting. Any elastomeric (rubbery) substance such as with better abrasion resistance will be a better option.

In fact Polyurethane may be considered for lining the complete inside surface for longer life. Polyurethane sheet should also be available for lining purpose.

Rubbery would also be my first recommendation.

Some epoxies have less hardness than others and may be suitable.

I would look for a high peel strength compound.

Hi timpatco,

If you have decided to go for only epoxy, you can opt for epoxy repair compounds from either `Belzona' or `Philadelphia Resins'. If you google, you will get the material details and you will certainly find some stockist or distributor near your area.

Natural red rubber sheet patches adhered with RTV sealant(silicone caulk) works very well until you can do better. In my former life I used this for temporary patches between rebuilds in a sand cleaning plant.

Hello,

Just wanted to ask if you use walnut shell media in your 'blasting' applications. It is non-toxic, biodegradable, dust free and all natural. We manufacture and ship over 30 mesh/grit sizes globally. It is an eco-friendly product. In searching for your epoxy under Adtech...I found what you might want at www.ides.com/grades/ds/E16966.htm

Hope this helps.

Hang rubber mats for protecting the booth walls. I have build several booths on sight using OSB and sheet metal screws. The key is rubber. If you need to repair the old booth use rubber patches and sheet metal screws and hang rubber mats. I apologize for the redundancy here but this is the only thing that is cost effective and works.

Hi,

Yes amazing that natural rubber seems to be the very best solution. Given our proximity to Malaysia, we should be able to find a solution nearby,

Cheers, Tim

Urethanes are probably the highest in abrasion resistance. They come as 2-part liquids. Google "Cast Urethane".

I have been manufacturing sand blasting machines for a long time and use Buna rubber curtains hung loosly on the walls of the blast cabinet. You can first repair the damaged areas with sheet metal either screwed or welded and then hang these sheets, (we always used 3 mm thick) and they will create a resiliant surface that will absorb the impact of the blast media and avoid any wear of the steel surface of the blast chamber
