I Believe B.O.M.= Bottom Of Masonry Wall

Don't you hate it when someone uses abbreviations and ASSUMES you'll know what they are talking about?

That would be my guess. BOM is not a standard acronym that would be universally known in the industry the way TS, BS, POL, HP, LP, PC, PT would be.

I don't consider it to be annoying. OP stated that there are many of these. Go out of the office and look at one and from that point on, you will know. I would be more annoyed if as the Survey Chief, I had to write out "Bottom of Masonary" two hundred times in the field book.

Yes it would be annoying to a Survey crew to have to write Bottom Of Masonry Wall over & over again.

I don't have a problem with it being abbreviated in a field book for internal office use. But if this is a description used in a book covering Benchmarks in Public use format. I've always been taught to spell even the most obvious things out. So that there is no chance for error.

We've even had to go as far as spelling out Reinforced Concrete Pipe instead of using RCP on most of our plans. Because the Yahoos that sit in positions at a Cities various boards that have to review our plans so we can get permits don't have the faintest idea what they are looking at.

But yet they get to tell us what we can and can't do in their city. Its getting to the point you have to IDIOT PROOF everything you design because the people reviewing your plans have no construction or engineering background what so ever.

In a few of our cities here in Metro St. Louis you practically have to do a FULL set of construction plans just to get the Preliminary layout & design put on their agenda for a zoning change. It ridiculous.

All good points.

I'm not even sure OP is in U.S. I had the notion he was in India, but I could be wrong.
