Voice Manipulation

01/18/2008 10:40 AM

Is there a device out there that can change the pitch of a voice (say make it male or female)?

There are what is called Pitch Transposers. They have been around for decades and are used in the music industry.

I saw one of the first ones at a store and we (I) promptly wired it up to a telephone , changed my voice pitch until I sounded like Donald Duck, and promptly dialed the operator. I spent about 5 minutes trying to convince them that there was something wrong with our telephone service. I sure had them miffed.

Any music store carries them and you can look them up on the web.

Only a change in pitch will not help as the major difference in a male voice and a female voice is in harmonics of voice. So a change in harmonics is also required. Else your voice would be like Donald duck, micky mouse etc but not like a real female one.

Here the results of a quick search. After a quick look, there are several shareware and freeware downloads you can try. Good Luck.

Learn a tonal language like Thai (5 tones) or Chinese (6 tones) that will improve pitch or learn the stress structure of nontonal. Good Luck

It is kind of interesting how musicians use this technology. They can filter their singing to put them on pitch. It even works in real-time, but there is a risk of little falters. There was some event that Billy Joel sang at last year (World Series game, I think), and the computer was having some difficulty. I wasn't really aware of what was happening, but my violinist wife's ears are much more sensitive to that sort of stuff, and she picked right up on it. I was just happily singing along, while she was cringing.

Tin snips can take you from male to female - I'm not sure how to get back, though.

Actually, i did not think of the stalking option

I write plays in Spanish for kids to learn the language and decided to make a CD of one play, but I need several voices to make it more complete.

Thanks!

You all remember that gawd awful song by Cher? She did that funny voice with pitch changers on steroids.

Worst invention ever as you cannot tell anymore with certainty if somebody can realy perform or not. Most "new" acts on the block have admitted to using them to "straighten" out their rotten pitch, tone, key and beat.

I blame that Simon Cowell myself

A couple of years ago I made some equipment for TC Helicon, and learned more then of the extent of voice manipulation technologies. The equipment available, can do anything from pitch changing, or complete synthesis. It is widely used in the recording industry (don't just think music, but also marketing, radio bits, news broadcasts) where the studio can get most of what they need with one vocalist instead of a few. I was surprised how effectively the equipment can also make a 'bad' voice into a 'good' voice, and how often it is used 'on the road' by stage performers ... it makes sense that even the best performers have 'off days' when they travel. Not exactly the 'Milli Vanilli' situation, because it isn't a 'cheat' ... just an 'improvement'.

What you will find at TC is pro-sound equipment, and not for the financially 'faint of heart', but it is a good place to learn about what is possible.
