Hybrid ICs (chip) PCB Manufacturing

04/19/2006 8:10 AM

Rana Tahir writes:
Some PCBs are manufactured on ceramic material. These small size PCBs contain some SMD components. PCBs have resistors designed on its surface like tracks with any material and they look like a thin layer of any paint, etc. These types of PCBs are mostly used in frequency convertors (Invertors)and called chip or hybrid ICs. I have questions:

1. How and where these chips are manufactured and what are its estimated expenses?
2. Mostly these PCBs are covered with a ceramic type material for safety, and this material does not dissolve in any commonly used chemical, i.e., thinner, butyle, etc. What is the name of this ceramic material?

Ceramic Chip Capacitors

For ceramic chip capacitors, the materials used include ceramic COG (NPO), X7R, and Z5U. Here's a link to where I found this material.

Hybrid Circuits

Hybrid circuits are certainly not limited to frequency converters, although that is one application. Thick-film resistor material is typically a metal alloy, and the compositions of the material is usually guarded by manufacturers of hybrid circuits and thick-film chip resistors. The thick-film resistor material is silk-screened onto the ceramic substrate as is the conductors, dielectrics, and solder paste. A quick search on the internet for manufacturers did not turn up any which listed chemical compositions of resistor material.

These are used in accellerated-Temp areas.
Ceramics are highly Stable in Temperature-Co-efficient,used to maintain the variation in component values almost to zero with hi changes in temperature. Type of material NAME? except that they are normally called Hi-Temp_Hi-Stabillity-Ceramics.

If you have seen Hi-power Resistors, you willnote that most of such resistors are on Ceramic material cores. There is one more material [sorry I can't recall the name,it has green finish ] is also used for the purpose.

Ceramic substrates

Sorry -- I misread part of your question. Typical ceramic substrates for thick-film hybrid circuits is "alumina." Coors Ceramics is just one company which produces high quality alumina. Look up "Industrial Ceramics" on GlobalSpec's website, or visit CoorsTek
