The Dilbert Effect

01/24/2008 4:40 AM

Following on from STL Engineers post about the strange management techniques in the Dilbert cartoon strip, I'd like to ask the engineering community to translate the following statement. This is an actual biographical sketch, only the names have been hidden to make it harder. My question is, what are the actual facts about the chaps life.

'***** ***** was a famous cowboy in the Montana Territory. His business empire grew to include acquisition of valuable equestrian assets and intimate dealings with the Montana railroad. Beginning in ****, he devoted several years of his life to service at a government facility, finally taking leave to resume his dealings with the railroad. In ****, he was a key player in a vital investigation run by the renowned ***** Detective Agency. In ****, ***** passed away during an important civic function held in his honor when the platform upon which he was standing collapsed.'

As engineers, we have to try and interpret our managements wishes, good luck with this.

PS, This came from Masu, so English Rose, masu, vermin, europium, photonicgirl, Yuval, Kris, Del the cat all know the answer, therefore I'd ask them to butt out!

three dates:

1883, 1887, 1889

and a little more:

On the back of the picture is this inscription: "***** ******; horse thief,
sent to Montana Territorial Prison ****, escaped ****, robbed the *******
***** six times. Caught by Pinkerton detectives, convicted and hanged in
****."

This bloke is a kindred spirit! <Cough>

acquisition of valuable equestrian assets - he was a horse thief < Splutter>

intimate dealings with the Montana railroad - he robbed their trains <Wheeze>

devoted several years of his life to service at a government facility - the sheriff nicked him and put him away for a few years <Hrrrrph>

finally taking leave to resume his dealings with the railroad - he broke out of jail and carried on robbing trains <Splutter>

he was a key player in a vital investigation run by the renowned ***** Detective Agency - the boys came round looking for him <Cough, cough.>

passed away during an important civic function held in his honor when the platform upon which he was standing collapsed - he was hung at the gallows <splutter>.

Did I win the beer money, Gov? <Splutter, cough>

Yep! You win the Frontkin Wobbler award for deviousness! For extra credit, who is his descendant?

Jesse James, the custom bike builder, from Monster Garage.

You can give the extra beer credits to Stinky Pete.

This one is older than me. All together, now, can you say "Not true!"?

Nice whitewash job done by a government instrumentality to disguise the image of a high profile presidential candidate's ancestor who was hanged for being a horse thief and train robber. Just put the first phrase in Google to get the whole story
