CR4 Members Internet Access Speed Down/Up

01/24/2008 4:54 AM

It's 2008 now. What kind of speed are you seeing for you Internet access? Do the test on Speakeasy and post your results with cut/paste.

I am here in Salem, OR, USA and have Comcast.

Download Speed: 21069 kbps (2633.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

Upload Speed: 1591 kbps (198.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

Would be nice if it was 30Mb each way, instead of 21Mb & 1.5Mb.

Now it is a quarter to 4 in the morning and others are starting to use it and look how much it has dropped.

I did the test couple times and got different reads at the same spot

best i did was Download 663 kbps Upload 653 kbps.

checked some of the other sites that have testing

and they ran about 600 kbps up load and down load

did notice though that the farther away you tested the slower the speed

So Del don't feel so bad I didn't do any better than you to London

Re: CR4 Members Internet Access Speed Down/Up

I have Comcast too, and I love it. And I live only a few miles north of you, MrChevy.

But I guess it's fair to tell the not-so-lucky others the whole story: Comcast uses a dynamic allocation of its bandwidth they call "Power Boost". That means when you're asking a lot from Comcast, like downloading a big file or watching online videos Comcast gives you all that it can (as long as your neighbors are not trying to do the same thing). But this bliss doesn't last forever. If you try to download movies all day long you'll see the speed drop pretty soon. And if you try to download movies all day long for a full month you'll get a phone call from Comcast :)

Anyway, I think the Power Boost is a very smart thing, because most subscribers use the bandwidth in a "civilised" manner.

But we're not so lucky when the bill comes!

I only have 2 choices here regular dial up or comcast, I could probably live w/a DSL if I could get 1 @ 1/3RD the price.

I live close to where comcast connects to the internet.

The figure below is w/both my computers online @ the same time when I have a minute I'll try running the test on both machines simultaneously ( same & different servers)

Bill,

Notice under Garth'S name he is in Madera Ca. Just like (with you) WA=Washington, with him CA=California Not CAnada.

Just hi-lite Madera Ca and Google it and it will show you exactly where Madera Ca(California) is.

I notice lots of people using cable in California have pretty good speed on the Internet. (In the 30+Mb range) Waiting for the day we get 30MB access or 300MB access... then (with 300MB access) a 600MB file would take less than 2 seconds to download. Oh, gonna have to have a little faster HDD's aren't we! :)

It IS a really small world, and getting smaller all the time. When I was a kid (wellll, still am) 50 years ago, it took a long time to see what was happening in the "world". Now we watch it live. Maybe the world is going to fast? LOL

Re: CR4 Members Internet Access Speed Down/Up

Doesn't this all vary with;

Test server used

Size of test file

Time of day

For what it's worth I got 1927/189 , not that I appreciate the subtleties of download speed vs transfer rate. ( Explanations appreciated). The set up I have works for my needs ( any time of day), and having just bargained Virgin down to £10/pm I'm content with it. It's worth the occasional grumble ( I had been paying £18/pm, and was really just 'trying it on' ,on the off-chance of a better deal). My understanding is that the ISP's apply throttling to slow you, and also cache pages to speed up access.

Most UK providers carry sneaky 'fair usage' clauses, though I've not experienced any problems with Virgin.

I shall sit back and read, since I feel myself oozing out of my technical depth.

Bytes me.

It doesn't appear as if one person on dial-up has given their speed. Everyone has DSL, Cable or Satellite?

Re: CR4 Members Internet Access Speed Down/Up

I have Comcast and when it works, it works really well, but it often slows down. By slowing down, I don't mean the bit rate, because the ping test shows it going fast. But it seems as if I have to line up in a queue, so to speak. I sit there and nothing happens. I watch the light on my router, and it just sits there, then eventually all of a sudden it starts blinking and then the action occurs.

Is this a common occurrence? Are there so many people using Comcast in the neighborhood I have to wait my turn? Any other explanations?

I don't know for sure but Charter seems the same.

Pings must get high priority and user access gets low. Would not be hard to do.
