UV-c sterilizer

01/24/2008 12:07 PM

Recently a Chinese company offered me UV-c tubes for water sterilization. According to them there are 2 types tubes with Ozone filled which gives out smell and tubes without ozone fill.

According to my knowledge what is known as UV-c is tubes which gives out ultra violet rays at 252.3 nm wave length.

Can some expert clarify this matter?

I want to use the tubes for sterilization for water and for me price factor is important and I am very happy with prices the Chinese party offered.

The germicidal UV tubes, as you say operate at the mercury emission of 252 nm wavelength, they have quartz glass to transmit the UV energy, no phosphers are used...

As to what they mean by ozone filled tubes is beyond me, they should be filled as a normal fluorescent tube with a minute amount of mercury...

Operating these tubes causes the oxygen to separate into ozone but this is short lived, so I can't comment about what they are referring too...

Best to ask them again to clarify.

John.

I agree.

I have been working with these Chinese UVC tubes for several years. I have never heard of ozone filled tubes.

O3 can only be generated onsite, not stored, as it is unstable. Left to its own devices, it will eventually revert back to plain old O2, which means you cannot use it to fill a glass tube.

Check with your vendors exactly what they mean by O3-filled that gives out smell. Do they mean the lamps also generate O3 that can be used to kill foul smells? If so, they'll be very effective at sterilizing the water, but be careful what you do. The release of O3 into the lower atmosphere is banned in most countries, and with good reason too. O3 is highly toxic, so make sure it's kept submerged at all times.

What they meant was that there are two types of germicidal lamps ("tubes") suitable for your application:

As others said, one type emits ony 254nm wave length and is usually just called "germicidal". These are widely used in water purifiers and sometimes air purifiers.

The other type emits 254nm but it also emits a small amount at 185nm. The 185nm light will ionize the oxygen around the lamp and produce airborne ozone. There is no ozone inside the lamp. These are commony called "ozone producing lamps". These are more often used in air purifiers, but also in water units.

A WORD OF CAUTION: Please, please use extreme care when working with UV lamps. The UV can damage your eyes and skin much faster than you would ever believe possible. This is NOT like going to a tanning bed. Just a few moments (not even minutes!) of exposure can cause extreme "sunburn", skin peeling, etc. The effect is far worse on your eyes. Even brief exposure can burn them badly - easily enough to loose your vision. You will get no warning while you're being damaged - the effects don't show up until a few hours later. I work with UV on a regular basis and can tell you from personal experience you that you must never, ever take UV safety for granted. I've had some stupidly careless accidents with it myself. It's all too easy to forget to put on UV-proof glasses or get too near a lamp that is on.

Sorry to preach on that. Just don't want to see anyone get harmed.

These low pressure mercury vapor lamps for uvc come in at least 2 varieties, ozone producing and non-ozone producing....the low pressure mercury vapor lamps produce wavelengths in the 254nm and 185 nm ranges...on the non-ozone producing lamps they add a filter that blocks the 185 nm light peak...

252.3nm ? Then i think it's a uv mercury tube.
