Cycling in the Dark

04/21/2006 9:20 AM

When cycling in the dark, have you ever wondered how much of your pedaling power is lost through dynamo inefficiency? Vintage Bicycle Quarterly examines the efficiency of a number of popular cycle generators, giving details of the nighttime power requirement with the lighting switched on and daytime losses with the generator on open circuit. Generator hubs from a couple of manufacturers are compared against a popular side-wall powered model.

Who uses a generator? With Lithium batteries and Luxeon emitter led equipped lights, who needs a generator? I cycle all winter, despite the snow, and use a two light unit on my bar with dual 3 watt led's and a lithium battery, and can ride over two hours use even in 10 degree F weather. (keep the battery tucked inside your clothing to keep it warm) I doubt that the minor weight addition penalizes me as much as the drag from a generator would.

Generator?

Right. Who needs a generator? I'd like to know how much electricity could be produced by the folks who walk tread mills and ride bicycles in health clubs. If these machines could power the overhead lights (or at least power themselves), what would the cost savings be?
