Automated Hooks (clamps) for clamping to I beams

01/25/2008 6:51 PM

I am trying to find if there would be any automatic hooks or clamps to clamp and lift I beams. The I beams are approximately 24' length and weighs approx. 2 Tons. I am planning on hooking the I beams to on overhead crane and move it for painting. In order to do this, I will hook up a spreader bar to the overhead hoist and then I need to somehow hook up the spreader bar to the I beam. I thought I could use somekind of a clamp, one end can be (hooked / clamped) to the bar and the other end can be hooked to the I beam, preferably with automatic controls for safety reasons. So I am trying to find if there is any "automated clamping devices".

Ask dealers in Wire Rope Slings/tackle.

Otherwise make one using compressed air-- and crane operator engages it.

Look into something along these lines. We use them for Pipe, etc. Many different configurations are available and we have lifted up to 10 tons with a vacuum lift.
