High speed compact heart pump

I saw this piece on a 10,000 rpm compact heart pump on the evening news.

I know some time ago the primary engineering problem with a high speed pump was damage to platlets and clotting issues (at least that is what I remember).

Is anyone involved in this area? What was done to solve the engineering issues with high speed heart pumps?

I wonder if they are looking into using artificoal blood.

One of the interesting things about blood circulation is that the flow is laminar, i.e. Re<2300. There must be reasons for that.
