How I design an crude oil separator by gravity using a vertical tank called "Gun Tank"?

Can't find any reference - a Google search for

"gun tank" oil separation

links back to this thread! Can you (A) register, & (B) give some more detail?

<separator by gravity>

Gravity alone will take ages.

ElectroCoagulate(EC)= in minutes

Google ElectroCoagulation---.

If you want to DIY at low-low budget ask Yours Truly How to.

Please refer to API SPEC12J "Oil and Gas Separators".

For simple gravity separation, you need to use an oleophilic material for the tanks and baffle plates e.g. polypropylene. You'll need to angle the baffle plates at an angle of 55o towards the incoming flow.

You should also make the tank cross-sectional area as large as possible to slow the water down, and make the travel distance for the water as long as possible i.e. make the water meander.

Finally, the discharge point of the water should be located near the top of the tank, but the intake should be near the bottom of the tank. The inlet for oil itself should be located just under the surface of the water.

"the discharge point of the water should be located near the top of the tank"

What do you mean with the discharge point of water? Do you mean inlet of the water? Is there any inlet to water? Is that water for washing of oil?

Or do you mean outlet of separated water? In this case the outlet must be located near the bottom not near the top.

All designers are prefer to nominate the nozzles of pressure vessels, heat exchangers and storage tanks by inlet and/or outlet, not by "discharge", because "discharge" may be denotes to both "discharge into" the vessel or "discharge from" the vessel.

The correct term is "Gun Barrel" tank and it is commonly used for oil/water separation. It is a vertical cylindrical tank in which oil/water emulsion enters near the top level, passes through a degasser and down into the tank through a flume.

Thank you, Guest.

At least it wasn't a mis-heard "gunge tank" - which I suspected for a while!
