Interesting Material Handling

01/28/2008 12:41 PM

Hi,

I was looking to write a paper, focusing on an industry where interesting or revolutionary material handling is applied, from production to distribution. Any advice/real world experience from you would be great. I was thinking of :

1. Oil industry : Because of the impact on our lives.

2. Nuclear : Careful handling of wastes

3. Semiconductor industry : Precision..

Thanks

Ron

I have worked in this industry for 33 years but I have intersting write up for other industries. If you are intersted I can e-mail to you.

Suresh,

Thank you for the generosity. I would certainly read it. My email is ron.r.george@gmail.com.

i am working on a new method for material handling in the polyurethane industry (isocyanate and polyol)

it is more flexible, reduces cost, eliminates transfers, fits with global logistics and eliminates large expenditures for fixed bulk tank capital - it will be extended to sub assemblies as well

if interested please email me spiveys@entgroup.net

also let me know if it is a project or will be published? where?

thanks

I work in the nuclear industry in Canada, and I would definitely suggest researching #2. If you can engineer a process to neutralize radioactive waste instead of the current technologies of storage in water and underground or the suggested "idea" of shooting it into outer space (Sheesh - bad idea). Then you would be a wealthy man.

Good Luck

My suggestion is research what AECL is doing.

I believe the future of energy lies in renewable energy and thermodynamic transfer of energy into useable power. Many engineers are involved in this effort.

Thus for aspiring engineers I would consider a paper on the following materials which will play a large role.

1. Concentrated solar energy transfer into energy through Stirling (Carnot cycle) engine motion using innovative material usage :

a. Storage of heated materials such as molten salt or oil.

b. The new Johnson Carnot heat cycle invention that makes electricity directly from heat

c. Solar chimney towers a half mile high

d. Power towers, parabolic and trough (mirrored) energy systems.

2. Innovations in engineered concrete, a marvelous material used ubiquitously throughout construction, artistic sculptures and fixtures for strength and thermal mass:

a. Passive solar construction

b. Countertops and sinks

c. Earthquake proof fiberglass and poly reinforcement

d. Fly ash and perlite additives that turn concrete into insulation

3. Innovations in photovoltaic materials

a. Concentrated solar photovoltaic systems

b. Flexible panels

4. Innovations in battery materials are happening daily as the storage of energy becomes important to solar and wind production. Storage is the key to stop the burning of anything (pollution-free) energy.

5. Transparent material innovations (in glass and poly, windows and doors) used for day lighting (instead of electric lights).

Corneliusvansant,

Thanks for your input. Its definitely given something more to think about. But I wasn't merely talking about materials, but materials handling. An example would be forklifts, or conveyors, RFID chips, things of that nature. I wanted my paper to focus on an industry thats really leapfrogging in this area. At the same time, a paper about a new type of technology is also viable.
