False Alarm Activation

01/31/2008 11:57 AM

Does anyone know of any information or reports related to smoke alarm false alarms and humidity and or chemicals related to stripping floor finish of of floors? The background is a floor crew was scrubbing floors in a corridor that had fire doors closed on each end. While in the process of using either Stride or GP Forward to remove the top layers of floor finish. They then applied a new finish 'Vectra Floor Finish'. WE experienced a fire alarm which was linked to a smoke detector head in the corridor where the work was being completed. There have been other occurrences where smoke detector heads sent a false signal in other facilities. Is there a link and which may be the most likely cause the humidity, chemicals or the wet removal process? Has there been any studies published in this area?

Dear Ruro0302: Many of the smoke detectors used in commercial buildings use what is in effect a high frequency ionization process to detect smoke particles. I the cleaner are volatile enough, the detector head will register the vapors as smoke.

B.T.W. I once had a head trigger an alarm when a large floor fan was directed towards it. The dust particles from the fan cage where blown into the ionizer head.
