Floor Work vs Fire Alarm Activation

01/31/2008 11:58 AM

Does anyone know of any information or reports related to smoke alarm false alarms and humidity and or chemicals related to stripping floor finish of of floors? The background is a floor crew was scrubbing floors in a corridor that had fire doors closed on each end. While in the process of using either Stride or GP Forward to remove the top layers of floor finish. They then applied a new finish 'Vectra Floor Finish'. WE experienced a fire alarm which was linked to a smoke detector head in the corridor where the work was being completed. There have been other occurrences where smoke detector heads sent a false signal in other facilities. Is there a link and which may be the most likely cause the humidity, chemicals or the wet removal process? Has there been any studies published in this area?

Depending on the detector, I false alarms are caused from the following causes:

  • Dust or any aerosols in the air; either allot at one time, or built up over a long period. They should be vacuumed or cleaned ~ once a year or more, depending on the environment.
  • Humidity, from a shower or boiling water
  • Radio interference from a hand held radio can also trigger a false alarm.
  • Low or weak batteries can cause false readings

There has been numerous cases of a carbon Monoxide detector being set off by other chemicals. This is due to the characteristics of the sensor.

Why start a new thread on the same topic? You already have a thread on this (http://cr4.globalspec.com/thread/16981#newcomments) and it's not even warmed up yet.
