How To Understand Enclosure Format 2U 3U etc

02/05/2008 2:13 AM

Please could someone provide me with information or a link which will detail the international "U" standard for enclosures. I am in the process of designing our own enclosure and rack system for our company.

In the 19" racking system, 1U =1¾" (44.45mm). The Us are for the vertical pitch between rack units.

It is usual to allow about 2mm clearance on front panels (to make sure they can slide in and out easily). Thus a 3U panel (3U = 5¼" = 133.35mm) would typically be 131 or 131.5mm high.

If you go to the Schroff website (http://www.schroff.co.uk/) and register, you can download an excellent 'catalogue' called the Standards Summary for Electronics Packaging. This has everything you need to know, in very clear detail.

I'd mail you a copy, but the .pdf download is over 5Mb.

Thank you, This however now raises the following questions as well:

1: What would be the standard mounting dimensions vertically and horizontally of the "U" standard?

2: Or What would the standard pitch of mounting rail holes be, to facilitate any combination of panels? The reason for asking this is that I need to design the mounting rails as well that accept the cage nuts?

The Schroff book gives a lot of this, but doesn't seem to show the cagenut piercing details for the rack supports. This is described, but not shown, in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/19%22_rack.

As you can see, it's quite a complex pattern of holes on the verticals - it's designed so that you can mix'n'match different height chassis units in the same rack. It describes patterns of 3 holes, while most of the racks I've seen have patterns of two.

I haven't yet found a good definition - I suspect it's in the document EIA-310-D, linked in the wikipedia entry, but unfortunately, it costs!

You could cheat, i.e. find a rack & measure it!

If I come across any more info, I let you know.

It's a bit of a minefield - good luck, John.

Try www.middleatlantic.com, they have white papers and CAD drawings that detail exact hole spacing on the rails.

Trax,

Having been through a similar process for our Data Centre, you would be much better off and the cost would be far lower if you find a good manufacturer\supplier.

My personal preference for a large Data Centre 500sqm or more is a Knurr rack from Emerson Network Power Protection.

For smaller sites, I would go with the APC InfraXstucture range.

I have tried doing the design from scratch and unless you have the resources to do the design and build in-house or location is and issue.
Off the shelf is much easier.

Regards,
Sapper.

The panelhieght is 44.45mm or 1.75 inchs. Generally made with 0.5 to 1mm less for clearance.

The mounting holes in the panels are normally a slot 7mm x 10.50mm at 31.75mm centers, a third hole is on the center line. the pitch to the next set of 3 is 12.7mm.

Panel width 483mm or 19 "

Hole centre distance across widht 466.4mm

Square mounting holes are 9.5mm

The distance between the mounting angles is 450mm.

If you send e mail to sales@dataracks.co.uk I can send PDF of a drawing.

Hope this helps

Jeremy
