Shock Absorber Test Method?

02/05/2008 5:06 AM

My name's Christian (Madrid- Spain). I'm working at the university with an hydraulic Microtest (EFH series) fatigue test machine for automotive shock absorbers and i don't find information of any test method to prove them.

I need help in this term in order to complete my mechanical engineering project. I'm looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks a lot.

Christian-Israel Ruiz Pérez.

Search in www.sae.org for standards and white papers.

There may be other standards from MIL to ANSI: http://www.nssn.org/default.aspx

What sized shockers are you going to be testing? (curiosity)

Shockers from track race cars like Touring cars (Aus) or Oval racers, where the shocker travels are measured in the lower inches, or "Off Road" where the shocker travels are measured either in Meters or Feet?

Those are the babies that we are running on some of our racing buggies, with 18-22" of travel... Imagine the machine size for those ;o)

I know nothing about this sort of thing so please ignore me if I'm talking rubbish.

Make sure you include temperature cycling in the tests, especially, starting the compression cycles when the insides of the shock absorbers have been allowed (forced?) to low temperatures.

Why?.... Just because I've noticed on more than one car that when I set off for work on cold (around freezing) mornings the the shock absorbers make terrible noises over the first few speed bumps.

I have a friend who was doing car ice racing, he replaced the oil in his shocks with glycol so he would have less variations in damping.
