Australia Leads the Way with Buses

02/06/2008 5:51 AM

It seems Australia is leading the way when it comes to alternative-fueled urban transportation. With huge resources of sunlight available there, an air-conditioned, solar-powered bus is happening now. Check this out:

It looks pretty good and green a whole.

They need to hurry after signed Kyoto treaty and their leadership in per capita CO2 emission.

It's real step up.

I would be interesting how longer can be mileage without air conditioning?

Brilliant. Just the right application for urban buses where they could be charged at both ends of the journey, and give passengers time to get on, just needs adjustments to the timetables. And with more efficient solar collectors, city to city????? And it doesnt look ugly either, those side mirrors are a functional necessity in todays traffic.

Air conditioning, just redirect the air in, air out. Yes, I get that free on my car, 4 wind up windows and a sun roof.

Hi PWSlack.

There is just one small problem, for the last few days here in the West Midlands we have had no sun? Now, we used to have trolley buses her in this part of the country, until some short sighted politician decided we should go over to diesel powered buses!?

I can see the advantage of having solar powered buses in climes that have a lot of sun, and maybe one day when we can supply enough wind, wave, solar and other forms of alternative power, we too can have such buses? But until that happens we cannot rely on these solar powered buses.

Spencer.

I know this a long shot, but has anyone investigated the harnessing of power from UV radiation or is that a bit far fetched?

I think the Nature is the best inventor how to harness UV by means of photoshyntesis. I can't recall but I've been watching somewhere one University is developing the similar technology .

Yes UV is a factor of cancer disease... We can only plant a trees and hope for a while.

Australia is the poster boy for Skin Cancers.

Basal cell carcinoma, Squamous cell carcinoma and Melanoma.

Kids are not allowed outside to play at school if they are not wearing a hat.

Slip, Slop, Slap.

Slip in a shirt, Slop on Sunscreen and Slap on a hat.

Get a good quality T-shirt as many cheap ones have thin weave that will also let in UV rays. Many people suffer from skin cancers on back as they buy cheap shirts.

Many people use swim shirts, especially designed to block UV rays while swimming.

Both my kids have them and I won't let them swim without wearing them.

Don't forget to reapply sunscreen every couple of hours. Use at least 30+ sunscreen.

Sorry about N testing, probably can't do much about that except move.
