Pneumatic accumulator design

02/06/2008 11:52 AM

I need help in designing a pneumatic accumulator. The basics are: I want to use a foot pedal to get pressure into a small cylinder (12" long x 4" dia). This pressure will be stored for use later to drive a small air motor on my bicycle to assist me get up the hill.

Looking for a basic concept and lightweight pnuematic system I can build and test.

Many thanks

Thanks for a most interesting insight into strange inventions indeed.

However, yes I intend to charge one side of the piston mechanically , via a pedal of 12" long with mass of 200 lb through a freewheel gear. That will periodically get charged and thus keep ratcheting/moving the piston up the cylinder. Eventually a valve will exhaust the compressed air to a motor for driving, the mechanicals will then reset for another time.

air motors are very inefficient you will need to pressurize the tank to a very high level to 2000 psi or more to obtain enough volume of air to run the motor much more than a minute or two. I would not like to be riding around with a tank with that much pressure on it. Do to the inefficiency of an air motor you will be doing a lot more work over the long hull than if you petaled up the hill.

Good and accurate answer! I have rated it as such too.
