02/06/2008 4:35 PM

Can anyone tell me what the thickness of the hollow part of hollow interior doors that are 1 3/8-inch thick? (I'm referring to a 6 ft. 8 inch X 2ft. 8 inch door.)

Thanks,

I simply LOVE the empirical methodology at work here. I gave you a 'good answer' rating to help with the explanation. Also, you can tell Mrs 45 you are in the process of installing one of those peephole lenses because you are concerned for her safety. Hope the hole you made is small enuff...

Actually, I'm safe. As we age, she seldom gets past the top 5 things I do wrong each day (she and I are almost complete opposites when it comes to such matters - she is constantly asking "Why on earth would you try driving on 3 lug nuts just to see if you can?" Fortunately, she appears to like me.

Didn't you tell her that it would be much quicker to change flat tires if you only had 3 lug nuts.

Hi Ray,

Welcome to CR4! You've come to the right place for help and to discuss a wide variety of engineering/technology/science topics. I encourage you to spend a few minutes thinking of an ingenious username and join the group. When you are a member, you will get an email when someone answers your question and you probably have certain things to contribute as well.

BTW - why do you need to know the thickness of the HOLLOW part of the door? Just curious.

Mike

For all practical purposes it is 1 and 1/8 inch.

In my line of work I sometimes need to cut doors down and sometimes the door is cut so short that I cut off the bottom solid piece leaving the coragated cardboard and the two pieces of face veneer. If this is what You are planning then You need to make another solid piece to fit into the bottom. If you have a table saw you can make a piece out of a 2x4. Rip a piece 1 and 1/8 inch wide off the 2x4 and insert in bottom with a little wood glue on both sides, clamp and Your done. You may have to tweak the thickness a bit but this is a simple task.

In the housing blast in the 50's to 70's in Los Angeles area I ran a plant manufacturing those doors.

We use three to five truck and trailer loads of lumber a week making the "cores for those type doors. boards were random width/random length typically white fir or pine.

For that thickness door we used 1 1/8" thick lumber, called five quarter in the trade.... glued an 1/8" three ply "skin" (plywood) to each side made of the desired finish lumber ( mahogany/birch/gum/and later Masonite). These were all interior doors... exterior doors were...by code... 1 3/4" ....made from six quarter (1 1/2" thick boards) All lumber was kiln (oven) dried to permit use of water based glue.

Over the years we increased production from 200 doors a day to over 3000 a day/five days a week. There were four other plants in the LA area with like production capacity plus some smaller plants.

That were a lot of doors, sir! Of course, the way L.A. grew (and still grows), I'll bet they still had to truck 'em in from all over Sunday...
