Tightening torque for brass bolts

02/09/2008 5:15 AM

Hello everybody,

Questions:

1). What is the maximum tightening torque for brass bolts of M10 size ? I want to

tighten brass bolts on brass earthing bar.

2). What is the property class for brass ?

Could you recommend a comprehensive data sheet/table for this purpose ?

Thanks in advance,

Paata

The Bolt is not carrying the Current.

So why not use the highest strength steel (maybe plated) bolt for the current carring members to intimate contact.

Brass serves no purpose.

The question is, that equipment has already been commissioned and unfortunately I can not introduce any changes at my discretion. Actually I am going to carry out planned maintenance on equipment and as per job plan I am given tightening torque table in which data for brass to brass is not available. On the basis of available information I can assume, that roughly, torque of 21 - 22 Nm should be OK.

Thanks

If you are allowed 21>22N-m, you are fine.

Max. Shear stress at outer skin of 10mm dia will be ~10 N/ sq mm.

Failure of ordinary half-hard 62% Brass will be ~ 200 N/mm sq.

In my earlier post I said:

Max. Shear stress at outer skin of 10mm dia will be ~10 N/ sq mm

Oops ! it should have been 100N/sqmm

(allowed is 200N/sq mm--OK)

You are still OK

Tighen them up until they break, then back them off half a turn.
