What flowmeter to use for Cryogenic liquid loading to trucks

02/12/2008 9:07 AM

We are looking for a simple system of loading cryogenic liquid (LOX, LIN, LAr) into trucks and would like to use flowmeter to control the load to the truck. Please advise manufacturer/model of flowmeter to use.

The density of the cryogen as a liquid should be known.

So use weigh scales. Weigh the truck empty. Calculate the maximum increase in weight as a result of having the liquid loaded into the truck's safe volume, and stop short on, or before, arriving there.

First it all depends on your sales contract. As above, truck scales are used and the contractually specified method for determaining the conversion from mass to volume, or mass to energy.

Emerson electric through its Fishher/micromotion subsidaries make a direct mass meter that also measures realtime density that could also be used.

Depending on whether you are familiar with DP measurement, and you can control the temperature to the transmitter so it is not effected, you may want to investigate the McCrometer V-Cone. This differential pressure flowmeter has a long history with many types of cryogenic liquids, can handle a good sized batch measurement (such as a tankwagon), has quick response time, usually 10:1 flow rate turndown, and may be able to be direct connected (it requires little if any upstream and downstream pipe requirements). More information can be obtained from www.mccrometer.com, in their literature library on V-Cone, or by contacting McCrometer's Quotation and Applications Engineering Group at vconerfq@mccrometer.com.

The simplest way is to weight the amount of cryogenic liquid that you putting in the truck.

As others have said, we typically weight it rather than try to totalize some sort of flowmeter. You may have some boiling losses but I think they will be relatively small.

Another example of people not reading the post

I don't want to speak for others, but it seems that we read the post and said that maybe a flow meter wasn't the best way to go. I don't understand why this would be construed as not reading the post.
